Stepping aside from the current trends of coquette bows and quiet luxury, fashion has a new wave - and football is involved. San Francisco 49ers fullback wife, Kristin Juszczyk, is setting new standards and ideas when it comes to what to wear in the skybox. The National Football League has now licensed its logos to the designer to create customized apparel - like the jersey to puffer coat transformation worn by Taylor Swift, using her boyfriend’s, Kansas Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, jersey and number.
Sportico reports that the agreement between the NFL and Juszczyk gives her the opportunity to create women’s and men’s designs without hassle, and to be able to sell it at her own digression. Since Swift’s viral moment with her design, she has also created custom jackets for the wife of Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Brittany Mahomes. Sideline fashion from the clothing designer has also been worn by Simone Biles, as well as Olivia Culpa.

According to an interview with the NY Post, Kristin began to grow weary of “wearing the same old T-shirt and the same jersey to every game”. “I started with sweatpants because that’s kind of the easiest thing to make, very beginner-friendly. And then it all kind of just transpired from there,” she said.“Once I made those sweatpants, I just learned how much I love sewing and I love creating and it’s so rewarding and it became a later-in-life passion of mine. And now, I love the challenge of being able to come up with something different each week.”

While this is something exciting and fresh for sportswear, upcycling has been in the fashion world for many years. This is the process of taking old, or unwanted garments, such as designer print, an existing garment, or an athletic jersey, and turning them into new and unique pieces. Popularized by innovative Black designers, upcycled jerseys has touched some of our favorite celebrities. From talents such as Mariah Carey in her Wizards jersey dress, to Destiny’s Child performing in customized basketball shirts and dresses, these styles have been around since the early 1990’s.

The self titled brand, “Designs by Kristin” has been a work in progress for years. Juszczyk expressed that her love for fashion started with making Halloween costumes for her and her husband. Once finished with that project, she felt as though this is something she wanted to do for her entire life. “I have to say I’ve never felt more fulfilled in my life,” she said on her website. “I absolutely love what I do and just want to let you all know it’s never too late in life to rediscover a passion or talent!” What started as a passion project turned into the next best thing in sports fashion.
Not only is the NFL wife creating custom clothing for herself and other football girlfriends and wives, but she announced that her first official licensed NFL drop will donate all proceeds to charity. Donations were raised for the National Breast Cancer Foundation. As of February 16th, she raised $75K for the foundation.
